Alas, they’ve come a little too close to that with “The Regime,” a political satire that’s weird but not very good, other than savoring Winslet’s over-the-top antics as an autocratic leader. When the story begins, Vernham is already engaging in odd behavior that leaves her ministers (who assemble in “Dr. Matthias Shoenaerts and Kate Winslet in "Regime." Lustily sneering her dialogue in an exaggerated accent, Winslet throws her all into the character, but to what end? But after watching “The Regime,” consider this an offer they probably should have refused.

"The Regime'" is HBO's latest bet on Kate Winslet, who helped carry miniseries like "Mare of Easttown" to critical acclaim. But according to critics, the series doesn't entirely live up to Winslet's excellent performance. “So, who’s the pig lover here?”Wandering the grounds of Ross Mill Farm, a foster home and boarding spot for porcine pets about an hour outside Philadelphia, the four members of the band Mannequin Pussy answered the facility’s owner nearly in unison: “We all are!”Pigs are pack animals — not so different from being in a touring rock band, the singer and guitarist Marisa Dabice, 36, noted playfully. Maxine Steen, 34, who plays synths and guitar, felt an instant kinship with a hesitant hog named Max, proclaiming them both “so aloof.” The band, which also includes the drummer Kaleen Reading, 31, and the bassist Colins Regisford, 37, known as Bear, has been spotted with livestock a lot lately. In two of its recent music videos, the quartet cavorts with cows and sheep, and a pig features prominently on the cover of its fierce new album, “I Got Heaven.”Mannequin Pussy’s earliest releases were a fuzzy punk squall, but in its more than 10-year-run, its music has come to incorporate shoegazey swirls of sound, sharp hooks and intimate moments of vulnerability. The band reached a turning point in 2019 with “Patience,” an album that struck a balance between its more savage and tender sides. The coronavirus pandemic subsequently halted its touring plans, but not its momentum.

If your paranoia has lost its edge, “Rabbit Hole” might be just the multi-episodic whetstone you need. The atmosphere of the eight-part season 1, created by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa , is a mix of good-natured dread with a dash of cynicism, and though I wouldn’t say this in most instances, Mr. Sutherland is perfectly cast. He has an actorly capacity for epic arrogance and his character, John Weir , is nothing if not smug, even in the face of daunting assignments or federal authorities—whom he assures he is not engaged in corporate espionage. “Manipulating people, influencing markets is what then?” asks beleaguered FBI Financial Crimes Unit investigator Jo Madi (Enid Graham, “Mare of Easttown”). Replies the smirking Weir: “Consulting.”
Ads are coming to HBO original series like "Game of Thrones" on HBO Max. Running ads alongside HBO originals could turn off viewers or possibly anger creators. HBO Max has kept commercials off its most prestigious programming — HBO originals series like "Mare of Easttown" and "Game of Thrones" (though ads appear in HBO Max originals like "The Flight Attendant" and "Hacks"). At the service's launch, Andy Forssell, then HBO Max EVP and GM, called the plan an effort to create an "elegant, tasteful ad experience that is respectful of great storytelling." With HBO Max, WBD is racing to make streaming profitable while slashing debt.
